Dynamic Art!
Opens + Closes
Sequentially & Dynamically

Oriental Fans | Bought from Hotdollar
Solar Cell Sensors | www.robotroom.com/XSBoost.html
Arduino | www.arduino.cc/

How it would work
  • Each circle opens sequentially by a delayed time (eg. could be 2 seconds one after the other).
  • The order and the timing of sequence can be modified as pleased.
  • The opening mechanism is activated only when light is detected and vice versa for closing when no light is detected after a period of time.
  • Powered by Arduino. Controlled by Grasshopper.

The nitty gritty!

Breaking down the layers in the art structure
  • Opens/closes sequentially and dynamically creating a more expressive experience
  • Positioned at the facade for maximum visual impact
  • Simple everyday experiences (opening/closing windows) in a more expressive form
  • Basic but unusual shapes (circular windows) impacts people more in a non-logical way
  • Various sizes of circle (from biggest on the outside to the smallest in the middle) draws the person's vision towards the middle
  • The various sizes also plays with what patterns can be formed in the mind simply from staring at the art structure itself.

Grasshopper Script

How it meets the brief

Please refer to previous interim post to see how this is met

Dropbox Link for Deliverables

  • Digital 3D model (Rhino & Sketchup) & Script (Grasshopper)
  • 3D Images displaying architectural proposal
  • 3D Animation
  • Digital poster summarising design proposal (same info as presented in blog in pdf format)
PS. I realised looking back on my interim GH Script I may have attached the wrong file previously. Anyways the Interim GH Script will be attached correctly here. Apologies

Lastly the final GH Script uses the 'Stopcounter' allowing for opening only (used to show the animation).
The Interim GH Script uses the 'Invertcounter' allowing for opening and closing.
The Script can be modified to have either counter.

Open | Partial | Closed State

This is what I was missing! Sorry my brains been a bit fried from putting the GH script together + recovering from a cold doesn't help lol

Open State

Partially Opened State

Partially Opened State 2

Closed State

Concept explained in images... should have done this from the beginning. Anyways..
Last post for today

Interesting Blog

While I was doing my research for my current idea I came across this blog which opened my mind up to the possibilities of parametric modelling.

(blog is in Chinese but there's nice ideas through the images)

Feedback from Interim

- More circular panels can be added to the general art form
(allowing for a more distinct pattern & sequence)
- Find out what material to use in the circular quadrants
(flexible fabric possibly - look at pros & cons)
- Explain my idea more concisely!

PS. I've rephrased some of my wording/explanation in the interim post (the post before this one). So hopefully it'll make more sense :)

Breakdown of script

I played around with the Firefly counter, Kangaroo counter & the Generation counter.
The Generation counter give me the movements that I wanted.

At the moment it is opening and closing at the same time. I'll need to figure out how to make it open and close separately. Hopefully I can work the script a bit further..

PS. I'm surprised I even got it working the way I wanted it given I didn't even know how to create anything besides a box 3 weeks ago lol. Thanks Grasshopper forum :)

Idea | Sun, Toggle
Since this is based on more the art form (and also if it's creatable through Grasshopper!), I've kept the idea to the most basic function/purpose - Circular panels open and close to allow ambient light into the room.

The panels open sequentially from left to right.

Each 'cross/lines' operate in the same way as the kinetic art mentioned in the presentation board.

It is linked to a computing system and a light sensor which activates/deactivates the mechanism.

Main Angle
Having established a basic function/purpose for the art piece (to allow ambient light into the room), I was able to focus largely on how expressive and abstract this concept can be!

What this establishes
- Maintains the conditions of Project 1 (no disruption to space, airflow and a sense of security is not compromised). The art piece only opens and closes to allow light in. There is a large solid piece of protective glass behind it.

- Easily responds to its environment (detects sunlight, open | no sunlight, closes)

- Concept that's possible to develop realistically (hopefully)

:)

Feedback

So I think I need to focus less on the area of practicality and focus more on expressiveness and how it can interacted with its environment.

Also
- Less of an add on. More integrated into the structure
- More abstract. Focus on what sequential and fluid patterns it can create

I have a totally new design idea in mind.
New dynamic design idea = very excited :)
Creating in Grasshopper = not as excited !!

Will need to see how I go about creating in Grasshopper.
Will post later in the week when it all comes together (hopefully)
